I obviously never got to continue this composition that day or even the next day or the one after that and I will not continue to tell you how or when I composed it, this is not clear to me yet… but while the title INNER CITIES 9/11/2001 refers to the infamous date, the music in no way is meant to narrate those events. If anything it might contain some hint of the hopelessness of the contemporary arts and artists to confront tragedies of this proportion; and at the same time the need for artists to continue their own tragic/comic campaigns of hope and utopias which we all know are just around the corner.. Reinier for who this piece is written will certainly make each note sound like the history of time…”
” “..at home I practiced scales on an ubiquitous historical piece of furniture without which one can’t call a place home, or a city a city. City music existed way before Hip Hop or the stone of Rosetta. Zeus called it a universal black box on wheels in which all dead souls lived. So the piano, as it was called later, was basically a graveyard. Artritic european composers like Czerny, Clementi andMoscheles lived side by side with geniuses like Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Chopin, Lennie Tristano, Mozart, Cardew and Feldman. It is a prototype and instrument of democracy – even Zeus admitted that..”
