Best of Kassav’: 20ème anniversaire

In the early 1980s in Paris, the French-Antillean band Kassav’ invented ‘zouk’. The basis for this music style was the local carnival music from Guadeloupe and Martinique, where the band members were raised. Other Caribbean music styles such as salsa, kompa, merengue and also disco and funk were frequently added. This resulted in a highly danceable mix, which swept the Carribbean by storm. In Europe, Kassav’ was mostly popular in France, where they were worshipped. Lead singer Jocelyn Béroard also had some solo hits.

And winter came…by Enya.

Singer, pianist and composer Enya is on the list of best selling Irish artists right behind U2. But unlike U2, Enya’s album sales show an upward trend. Four of her albums were awarded a Grammy and her song ‘May It Be’, for Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings, received an Oscar nomination. Enya is an unusual phenomenon. The typical Enya sound is created in close cooperation with producer and arranger Nicky Ryan and song writer Roma Ryan. Enya can be recognized by the ethereal voice in which the melodies are sung, rich vocal overdubs, synthesizer accompaniment and trickling or pulsing rhythms.

This Celtic, New Age-like music is very suitable for the dark winter.

CD: And winter came… – Enya. Label: Warner Brothers (2008), code: 2564-6933068. VIDEO
