Opera in the 20th century

The history of twentieth century opera. 1961B

1961, the year J.F. Kennedy became President of the United States and also the year of the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion in Cuba. It was also the year in which the construction of the Berlin Wall began. In the land of music there were a number of beautiful premieres, including the Fonogrammi by Krzysztof Penderecki, the Jubilate Deo in C by Benjamin Britten and the Jeux Vénitiens by Polish composer Witold Lutosławski. The post-war avant-garde is advancing in the land of opera, but there are also quite a few traditional modernist works of art.

In this episode excerpts of:

Rodion Shchedrin- Not Love Alone (Не только любовь)

Paul Hindemith- Das lange Weihnachtsmahl

Renzo Rossellini- Uno sguardo dal ponte
