Friedrich Gulda and Alfred Schnittke

Though fascinated by Jazz from an early age, Austrian piano player and conductor Friedrich Gulda (1930-2000) had been instructed as a classical piano player. Throughout his career, he remained loyal to and became successful in both disciplines. Still, Gulda was criticized by both sides. In this edition, Gulda will be presented to you as classical piano player, Jazz pianist and composer.
On YouTube, you can find a recording of this programme’s concerto for cello and wind orchestra. Soloist Heindrich Schiff is the man this concert was dedicated to; the concert is conducted by Gulda himself. In 2002, the documentary “So what” was released, which can also be found on YouTube.

In this programme you will also hear Alfred Schnittke’s first violin sonata
