Opera in the 20th century

The history of twentieth century opera. 1984B.

1984: there is no escaping modernism. It was there but not in a permanent and settled way. There is minimalism too. Philip Glass’ best years are yet to come, but he is already producing entertaining and unconventional operas. Also less famous names are producing quirky pieces.

This episode features fragments of:

  • Luigi Nono- Prometeo
  • Luciano Berio- Un re in ascolto (The king is listening)

Other opera and operetta productions from 1984 are:

  • Dominick Argento-  Casanova’s Homecoming
  • Ādolfs Skulte – Pasaka par muļķa pelēnu (De fable of the foolish mouse)
  • Stephen Oliver- Beauty and the Beast
  • Aulis Sallinen-  Kuningas lähtee Ranskaan
  • Conrad Suza-  The Love of Don Perlimplin
  • Peter Schickele- The Abduction of Figaro
  • Philip Glass- Akhnaten
  • Philip Glass- The Civil Wars
  • Aribert Reimann-  Die Gespenstersonate
  • Rudolf Kelterborn- Der Kirschgarten
  • Karlheinz Stockhausen- Samstag aus Licht
  • Salvatore Sciarrino- Lohengrin
  • Christopher Yavelow- The Passion of Vincent van Gogh
  • Marc Sleen- Het rattenkasteel (opera for children)
  • Vladimir Kobekin- The Prophet (Пророк)
