Opera in the 20th century

The history of twentieth century opera.

1990 marked the beginning of a new decade and also the last one of the twentieth century. The new creative opera productions were often quite special and a little odd, too. But all the new models and techniques that were used in the opera world didn’t really surprise anyone anymore back in 1990. Both Philip Glass and John Cage represented the USA with new productions in 1990. In the same year, Hans Werner Henze and Einojuhani Rautavaara both had also two new operas premiered.

In this episode you can listen to parts from:

  • Einojuhani Rautavaara (photo) Auringon talo (the house of the sun)
  • Einojuhani Rautavaara- Vincent

Other opera and operetta productions from 1990 are:

  • John Cage- Europeras 5
  • Philip Glass- Hydrogen Jukebox
  • Hans Werner Henze- Das verratene Meer
  • Constantine Koukias- Days and Nights with Christ
  • Matthew Dewey- The Priest’s Passion
  • John Metclaf- Tornrak
  • Judith Weir- The Vanishing Bridegroom
  • Jack Beeson- Cyrano
  • Harrison Birtwistle- Gawain
  • Gottfried von Einem- Jesu Hochzeit
  • Salvatore Sciarrino- Cailles en sarcophage. Atti per un museo delle ossessioni
