Opera in the 20th century

The history of twentieth century opera.

1996B: Without exaggerating, I think it’s fair to say that 1996 was a great year for the opera; both in volume and quality. There were many American works to enjoy as well as the first Spanish-language opera to order in the USA. And the American Tobias Picker composed his first opera.

Furthermore, you can listen to well-known names like Phillip Glass and Peter Maxwell Davies. And let’s not forget the opera of the Chinese composer Tan Dun, which has become a cult by now.

In today’s episode fragments from:

  • Daniel Catán – Florencia en el Amazonas
  • Tan Dun (photo) – Marco Polo
  • Per Nørgård – Nuit des Hommes

Other opera and light opera productions from 1996 are:

  • David Conte – The Dreamers
  • Daniel Catán – Florencia en el Amazonas
  • Karlheinz Stockhausen – Freitag aus Licht
  • Alexander von Zemlinsky – Der König Kandaules
  • Tan Dun – Marco Polo
  • Per Nørgård – Nuit des Hommes
  • Lowell Liebermann – The Picture of Dorian Gray
  • Richard Mills – Summer of the Seventeenth Doll
  • Daron Hagen – Vera of Las Vegas
  • Peter Maxwell Davies – The Doctor of Maddfya
  • Tobias Picker – Emmeline
  • Phillip Glass – Les enfants terribles
  • Lorenzo Ferrerro – La nascita di Orfeo
  • Jack Beeson – Sorry, Wrong Number
