The Palace of Nostalgia

Music from days gone by.

This broadcast starts with a wacky car race between a Ford and a Mercury by Western Swing musician Ramblin’ Jimmie Dolan.

There’s a coalman who has hot coal on offer – you can guess what it’s all about: ‘The hottest stuff in town’ by Whistling Bob Howe.

Also, Cornelis Vreeswijk with a story about a rooster craving a naked chicken, the guitar band Bevel Emboss (‘Not in the house’), Herman van Veen with the sorrowful ‘Rivierenbuurt’ and French chansonnière Fréhel (‘Chanson des fortifs’).

And trumpet player Webster Young on the album dedicated to Billie Holiday ‘For Lady’ and also Lady Day herself (‘Do nothin’ till you hear from me’); Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington with Baby Cox (‘Hot and bothered’) and Roy Eldridge along with Dizzy Gillespie & Oscar Peterson (‘I cried for you’)

And, to return to the car race, a narrative by the Cocktail Trio with their adaptation of a Chuck Berry hit.
