The Other Europeans | Di Gojim | John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, Cyro Baptista & Masada String Trio – produced by Cobie Ivens

I– The Other Europeans. (22:37 min)
The Other Europeans is an international project that brings together 14 musicians from 8 countries to explore the common roots of Klezmer and Lautari music. Jews and Gypsies are ‘the other Europeans’, according to a group that sometimes uses the same name. Two peoples with a long history, but who did not entirely belong in Europe. For centuries, neither group was allowed to own land. That was one of the reasons why they dedicated themselves to music, something that ‘respectable people’ did not do anyway. Especially in Romania and Moldova, Jewish Klezmerim and Gypsy Lautari influence each other’s repertoire.

II– Di Gojim. (19:21 min)
The literal meaning of the Hebrew term “di goyim” is “non-Jews.” An excellent name for a group of six young Frisian men who are not Jewish, but who do love Klezmer. Di Gojim was founded in 1988 and was one of the first Dutch groups to delve into the long history of Klezmer. Di Gojim does not limit itself to playing nineteenth-century songs, but gives them a modern and exciting twist. During their shows, the band invariably brings a smile and a tear to people’s eyes. They perform lyrics by Isaac Babel, Herman Pieter de Boer, and Ivo Babel.

III– John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, Cyro Baptista & Masada String Trio. (17:10 min)
On The Circle Maker, Zorn has rearranged his popular and adventurous Masada project for string trio and chamber ensemble.
The passionate and evocative performances by these three virtuoso musicians shed new light on Zorn’s collection of inspiring compositions that enrich the Jewish tradition. It is a joyful and extraordinary celebration of Jewish music.
