Music Composed in the 20th Century
The term has been around since 1925: a ‘concerto for orchestra’. New and yet not entirely new, as it has its roots in the Baroque concerto grosso. Hindemith wrote the first, Bartók the best-known, and Belgian composer Arthur Meulemans also unleashed his orchestral demons in two Concertos for Orchestra, composed in 1953 and 1957.
