Chamber Music by Les Six at the Peter de Grote Festival 2019
It was around 1920 when a group of young composers in Paris felt that French music was too heavily dominated by German romantic influences. The rejected the weighty tone and bombastic musical language of Richard Wagner and his contemporaries. They sought a sense of playful lightness instead. Their motto: “l’art pour l’art”. It’s meaning: composing music for music’s sake, without any deeper meaning or ulterior motives.
In 2019, the Peter de Grote Festival devoted a number of concerts to the chamber music of these innovators, known as the Groupe des Six, or simply Les Six [pictured]. In today’s eposode you will hear a compilation of concerts we recorded on 21, 22 and 26 Juli 2019 at three venues in the province of Drenthe: The Concerboerderij in Valthermond, the Koepelkerk in Veenhuizen and the Hoofdstraatkerk in Hoogeveen.
