Jelly Roll Morton (1885-1940) was one of the New Orleans musicians who would go on to play a prominent roll in the history of jazz. A pianist, composer, bandleider and arranger, he wrote pieces that were played by jazz bands everywhere, in some cases as early as 1915. His own recording career, however, did not begin until 1923.
