A folk magazine exploring the past and present, featuring Sangpuy (Taiwan)

He is often described as “a young man with an old soul”. Sangpuy is a member of the Puyuma people, who live in the sparsely populated southeast of Taiwan. Unlike the majority of Taiwan’s population, the Puyuma have few cultural ties to mainland China. In modern Taiwan, there is no taboo surrounding expressions of Puyuma culture, whose community currently numbers around 14,000 people.
As a representative of this culture, Sangpuy recognises that Puyuma traditions are at risk of disappearing. Through a contemporary approach to music, he is working to keep the language and musical heritage alive. So far, this has resulted in four very different but highly acclaimed albums.
