A Second Chance for Hummel

tue 2 feb 2016 19:00 hrs

Producer and host Thijs Bonger continues his search through the life and works of Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837). Today Part XIV.

Napoleon was defeated in 1814 and the Allies convened a major meeting in Vienna for the repartition of Europe’s territory. For one year that city had 10,000 immigrants who of course had to be entertained. Concerts and operas were an essential part. For that reason those were golden ages for musicians and composers, such as
Beethoven, Schubert and the very active Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778 – 1837). He was on his way becoming a European celebrity, as a fabulous pianist, improviser and composer. We hear music of Beethoven and Hummel, partly written for a united Europe.
1. Beethoven: Wellingtons Sieg op.91, Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Herbert von Karajan
2. Hummel: Ballet Suite ‘Das Zauberschloss’, London Mozart Players, conducted by Howard Shelley
3. Hummel: Freudenfest Ouverture,
London Mozart Players, conducted by Howard Shelley
4. Hummel: Flute sonata in D major op. 50,
Lise Daoust, flute; Carmen Picard, piano.
