Bach Ad Infinitum

thu 12 jul 2018 13:00

Summer episode #4 on the weekday programme about the oeuvre of Johann Sebastian Bach. This summer episode is composed by guest composer Jos Bielder. His theme: The occasion creates the music.

We hear a festive Bach, in his secular cantata BWV 214 ‘Tönet ihr Pauken! Erschallet Trompeten’. This cantata was composed as a congratulatory cantata for the birthday of Maria Josepha, wife of August III, Elector of Saksen and King of Poland.

After that we hear the ecclesiastical cantata BWV 120 ‘Gott lobet mann in the Stille’. Bach composed this cantata in Leipzig for the inauguration of the newly elected city council, which took place in a festive service in the Nikolaikirche on the Monday following St. Bartholomew’s Day, on 24 August 1742.

Around these catatas three so-called Schübler Chorales. The Chorales are named after Johann Schübler, a German engarver and organist, mentioned on the titel page of the score.
