Interesting albums from the folk and roots music history, by Marius Roeting.

Today, the album of Moving Hearts from 1981.

Moving Hearts LP cover

In 1981, Ireland was screaming bloody murder. Northern Ireland, and especially Belfast and Derry, was a powder keg of IRA and Unionists attacks. The people opposed the oppressors and the republicans in independent Ireland were touched. Especially folk singers and groups were hugely inspired by the green island being split in half. Moving Hearts was one of those groups whose political views seeped into their music. Still, Moving Hearts is musically speaking an important link in the development of contemporary Irish folk as well. The basis of traditional folk, the rhythms, melodies and structures, were connected to contemporary singer-songwriters and exposed to a blend of folk, rock, pop, funk and jazz influences. The charismatic leader of the group was singer and guitarist Christy Moore, who once was part of another large Irish band, Plankxty, together with arranger and bouzouki player Donal Lunny. The duo was completed by a funky rhythm section, in the form of drummer Brian Cainan and bass player Eoghan O’Neill, jazz alto-saxophone player Keith Donald, electric guitarist Declan Sinnott, who once played folkroch with Horslips, and the promising and young Uilleann piper, Davy Spillane. Their untitled debut album, a mix of styles and song types, is considered to be one of the most important works in the history of Irish folk revival. We reintroduce you to this album.
