Interesting albums from the folk and roots music history, by Marius Roeting.

In this broadcast: Cro Magnon – Zapp!

Around the nineties of the last century, a Belgian quintet gained popularity with what they call Urban Chamber music. It is a fusion between classical, jazz, folk, world music, pop- and minimal music. New groups like Flairck, Zefiro Torna and Aranis owe a great deal to the creative impulse initiated by these five musicians. They brought strange, unique music through violins, keys, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and saxophones, complemented by electronics.

These musicians have roots in traditional folk music; that was why they were able to make a name for themselves in that scene. But certainly not everyone, not even outside of that circle, was charmed by the unpredictable, unique music.

Commercially, Cro Magnon never became a success. In 25 years, they released only two complete albums. On a project-by-project basis, the Brussella suite appeared in collaboration with the group Bub and a couple of years ago, a mini-CD called Floww…

So, Cro Magnon is still pushing forward, even if the pushing has been slightly reduced to knocking. Zapp! from 1992 is still standing, as original as it is surprising, creative and daring. Reason enough to reintroduce it to you.
