Episode 310 focuses on bandleader, composer and pianist Duke Ellington (1899-1974), featuring ‘Ellingtons Masterworks’, a CD by the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. The album was recorded in April 2024 at the MCG Jazz concert hall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Led by Charlie Young, the 15-piece orchestra comes impessively close to recreating Ellington’s distinctive sound. The repertoire is also worth noting, with a selection that is both unexpected and original.
