The Honolulu Minstrels
OK…… when having produced already 12 episodes of the rather popular 20th century’s Hawaiian-music, you simply cannot pass the Dutch amateur band that existed for almost 60 years; the band for which this programme’s compiler, Henk Braaksma, was the Hawaï-guitar player for about 50 years. The Honolulu Minstrels were formed in Bussum already in 1952, following the example of Rudi Wairata’s very popular Mena Moeria Minstrels. These amateurs offered such good quality that they were sometimes asked to replace the Mena Moeria Minstrels, whenever the latter had double bookings. Loek Moes, member of the famous baker’s family from the Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam, took charge. When in 1959 their excellent guitar player Leen Vijfwinkel emigrated to America, Henk Braaksma replaced him and soon afterwards they had their first TV appearance (1960). The recordings have luckily been saved at the broadcasting archives. When Rudi Wairata died, the band produced a ‘Hommage to Rudi Wairata’ which sold really well, also abroad, and since then it has been released on CD twice. In 2008 they published a second commercial CD. Enough reasons to put The Honolulu Minstrels into the spotlight.
