Irshad Khan (1963) grew up in Kolkata and nowadays lives in Canada. He belongs to the Imdadkhani gharana, a famous Indian school named after his great-great-grandfather Imdad Khan, a legendary 19th-century sitar player. As early as the 16th century, the forefathers of Irshad caused a furore on the sehtar and the sitar – the multiple-stringed Indian plucked lute – that stems from the sehtar, at the Indian royal courts. Irshad’s family represents the oldest sitar school; all other sitar schools have derived from the primordial gharana of his family. Irshad’s family also made name in the field of the surbahar, the bass sitar, which was invented in the 19th century by Sahebdad Khan, the father of the great-great-grandfather Imdad Khan. In this broadcast, Irshad Khan tells in detail about his famous musical forefathers and about his own career and music. Irshad was a prodigy who already gave huge concerts at the age of seven and who made his international debut at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London when he was only 13. Except for traditional raga music and fusion by Irshad Khan, you will hear music by Irshad’s father Imrat Khan, and by Irshad’s uncle Vilayat Khan, who is generally considered to be one of India’s greatest musicians of the 20th century. In short: an interesting broadcast about Irshad Khan and his famous musicians’ family.
