Graduation Masterpieces by Rachmaninoff, Prokofjev and Sjostakovitsj

This edition of Sonoor features three works that marked the culmination of their composers’ conservatory studies. In 1892, 19-year-old Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote the one-act opera Aleko in under three weeks. In 1914, Sergei Prokofiev performed his own Piano Concerto No. 1, composed in 1912, for his final examination in St Petersburg and won the prestigious Rubinstein Prize. Dmitri Shostakovich (pictured) completed his Symphony No. 1 in 1925, at the age of 18, while supporting himself by playing piano in cinemas. When the symphony premiered in Leningrad in 1926, it made him famous overnight.
