Horowitz and his Wanda (3/3)

The relationship between legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz and Wanda Toscanini was anything but ordinary. What began as a meeting eventually grew into a marriage in which love, music, temperament and ambition were constantly intertwined.

Born in Kyiv, Horowitz was a pianistic prodigy who earned admiration around the world. Wanda was the daughter of the famous Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini. She grew up in a musical environment, but was above all a strong and independent personality.

They married in 1933, and Wanda became not only his wife but also a crucial source of support throughout his life and career. Their marriage had its passionate and stormy moments. Wanda was outspoken and protective, while Horowitz was sensitive, perfectionistic and sometimes withdrawn. Behind the scenes, Wanda looked after his interests and tried to shield him from the pressures of concert life. At the same time, their strong personalities could clash.

It is precisely this tension that makes their story so fascinating. To Horowitz, Wanda was much more than a partner: she was his confidante, critic, manager and emotional anchor. Their marriage offers a glimpse behind the public image of one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century.
