In this program, we go to Peru and listen to liturgical works by three composers who worked there, including as the chapel master of the Cathedral of Lima.
The first composer is Juan de Araujo, who was born in Spain and emigrated to Peru with his parents. From 1672 to 1676, he held the position of chapel master of the Cathedral of Lima, and later worked in Bolivia. He was succeeded by Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco, who is primarily known for his opera “La púrpura de la rosa” from 1701. He held the position of chapel master until his death in 1728. He was in turn succeeded by Roque Ceruti, who came from Milan and settled in Peru in 1707. With him, the Italian style entered Peru.
