Religious music. This episode will feature music for the Lent and Passiontide seasons by German composers from the 17th and 18th centuries.
During lent the seven penitential psalms are sung. The first part of this program will be dedicated to two settings. Johann Rosenmüller composed music to the Latin text of Psalm 6, Johann schelle used Luther’s German translation for his setting of Psalm 50 (51).
After this we will listen to two cantates by Georg Philipp Telemann and Christoph Graupner respectively. Telemann’s cantate stems from his so called ‘French Annual Cycle’ (1714/15) in which he uses elements of the French style. Graupner’s cantata from 1731 is less dramatic than the title suggests. It’s not so much the events at Golgotha that are central; the cantata is primarily a meditation on human death in light of the crucifixion.
