Opera in the 20th century
The history of twentieth-century opera. In this tenth episode, the highlights of 1909. A somewhat turbulent year in the land of opera, maybe just because of the premiere of the ‘Erwartung’ by Arnold Schönberg.
This break from tradition will dictate the rest of 20th-century opera, more so than the expressionism and impressionism that where so domineering at the begininning of the century. Schönberg breaks with traditional expectations, with the help of Mahler by the way. But let’s not forget about Elektra by Richard Strauss and other opera gems. All in all, a great year for opera!
