The history of twentieth-century opera. 1936A: Adolf Hitler opens the Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Summer Olympics as well.
In all Dutch Roman Catholic churches a mandate of the bishops is read to the churchgoers in which NSB-membership is forbidden for Catholics. Dutch queen Wilhelmina opens the Waalbrug near Nijmegen, the largest arched bridge of Europe. On 17 July, the Spanish civil war broke out. The engagement of Dutch princess Juliana to the German prince Bernhard zur Lippe-Biesterfeld is announced. In November, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is re-elected as president of the USA by a large majority. Although there’s a limited opera production of mediocre quality, there are some special operas nevertheless. Some of them have recently been rediscovered.
