The history of twentieth century opera. 1965A
1965, the year in which the first New Year’s Swim was organised in Scheveningen and in which the first top 40 list was broadcast on the radio station Veronica. Malcom X is assassinated in Harlem and cosmic microwave background radiation was discovered. Singapore seperates itself from Malaysia, the second Auschwitz trial is ended in Frankfurt and radio station Hilversum 3 sees the light of day.
In the world of classical music there are a few beautiful premieres such as the first performance of Witold Lutosławski’s String Quartet and Symphony No. 2 by William Bolcom. There’s something new in the land of opera as well: the first Vietnamese opera premieres. One can sense changes coming but it takes a while for this to transform into a new movement. Although there is a new generation of composers, for the time being they stick to symphonic music and chamber music. Well-known names such as Nino Rota, Hans Werner Henze and Richard Bennett dominate the premieres during this year.
