Lebanon : Music by Philemon Wehbe
This episode is dedicated to Lebanon and features the music of a prominent Lebanese actor, comedian, theatre artist, and above all, one of the most important composers of twentieth-century Lebanon: Philemon (Filimon) Wehbe (1918-1985)
Filimon Wehbe composed many hits for the biggest stars of his time, such as Najah Salam, Sabah, Fairuz, and Nasri Shamseddine. His career spanned from the 1940s until his death in 1985.
He was known for his creative use of Middle Eastern maqams and local musical styles. Even his lighter and more humorous compositions for film and musicals can sound deceptively simple, yet they deeply move Arab audiences thanks to his refined sense of the oriental Arabic maqam and ‘Tarab’ — the intense emotional expression that is so characteristic of Arabic music.”
