An old LP sleeve dug up from the archives of the Concertzender. Washboard.
To close off the Holland Festival in 1970, Orchestra Washboard performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The visitors couldn’t believe their ears, "they were blown off their chairs by their own enthusiasm and started dancing", it says on the back of the LP.
Orchestra Washboard is a typical Surinamese kaseko band. The kaseko is Surinamese dance music that came to be shortly before World War II but was mainly developed after the war, influenced by North American and Latin American music. People often used lyrics of Kawina and other Afro Surinamese folk songs. Besides Mighty Koesi and Lieve Hugo, Mighty Power also sings the fitting song Prike Pré: "Wherever we go, people appreciate our music. Everywhere, in Suriname, in the Netherlands and elsewhere. We make people happy, they get high off of our music.’ That is definitely the case with Trafassi’s music. So turn that volume up!
