Our programme about books from Literary Travel Book Store ‘Evenaar’ in Amsterdam.
Part 13 Amir Chitzan (Iran): “Hyenas and the moonshine girls”.

What’s it like to live under a strict Islamic regime? The story is being told by the boy Siawash, who is growing up in an Muslim family in Iran, where they consume alcohol, listen to classical music from Tchaikovsky, Bizet or Chopin. But the little boy also needs to polish shoes on the streets after school to earn money. The Islamic Revolution starts with the burning of books such as Bibles and Torahs, followed by public executions of those who resist. Their names are published in the newspaper the day after. The book sketches an image of the horrors, the executions, at the time of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, but is at the same time very poetic.

It took twelve years for Amir Chitzan (1960) to write the penetrating novel ‘Hyenas and the moonshine girls’ and he is keen on an open dialogue about the Iran of his youth -of which he fled in 1993- and modern day Iran. In Dutch!
