Radio Around the Globe

wed 3 dec 2014 20:00 hrs

In this programme, we will be paying attention to book presentations in the Literary travel bookshop Evenaar in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In this second programme, we will pay attention to the book Dams and Roads in the inland of Surinam, by Maja Haanskorf.

A despription of the plans for a dam and roads in the inland of Surinam, where the Wajana and Trio live, two Indian tribes. How well are the people of these tribes being informed or consulted about these plans, which would have significant consequences for them – whole villages would disappear. The book describes the exciting journey of a Dutch reporter and a scientist in a small boat(corial), who visit different people to ask their opinion and impression. It becomes quite clear that most native people are very much opposed to the plans, which threaten their villages severely, if they have been informed at all. An informative book, which also gives a vivid description of the gruelling trips that the group had to make. The book contains many beautiful photographs.
Whether the hydro-electric power station will actually be build, is not clear at the end of the trip – one of these days in none of these days? The government of Bouters has postphoned it for now, but will it be realized in 2015?
Are you interested in this book? It is for sale at the Literary travel bookshop Evenaar in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and also to be ordered directly from the author via: majahaanskorf@hetnet.nl
