16th-century madrigals from the collection ‘I Diporti della Villa in ogni stagioni’, on poems by poet Francesco Bozza about the four seasons.

In this program, we will hear madrigals from the late 16th century. They were published in 1601 by Angelo Gardano in Venice. The title of the collection is ‘I Diporti della Villa in ogni stagioni’. At the request of Leonardo Sanudo, who belonged to one of the oldest families in Venice, the poet Francesco Bozza wrote four poems of five stanzas each about the pleasures of life in the countryside during the four seasons.

Five different composers were invited to set these poems to music. After an introduction composed by Giovanni Maria Nanino, four poems about spring, summer, autumn, and winter follow.

The program is divided into four sections: each section is dedicated to one season and concludes with lute music by Vincenzo Galilei, who was a member of the Camerata in Florence.
