A program full of American Roots Music. This time about female singers with unique voices and singing styles, including Karen Dalton, Odetta, and Tia Blake.
We play music by six singers, each with their very distinct sounds:
Karen Dalton blended blues and folk with a lived-in voice that was often compared to Billie Holiday’s. Singer Odetta became a key figure in the folk revival with her powerful, classically trained voice. The “white singer with the black voice,” Barbara Dane, moved effortlessly between blues, jazz, and folk. Elizabeth Cotten’s vocal notes were a bit off pitch, and together with her unusual guitar skills that created a truly unique sound. Tia Blake, with her sparse and pure vocal style, grew into a cult figure with just one album. Joan Baez is the most well-known vocalist in this lineup, with her clear soprano and distinctive vibrato.
They are all individual, original vocalists who often sang covers and traditionals, but made them so much their own that everything sounds brand new.
