The Hurdy-Gurdy: Old and New
The hurdy-gurdy played a prominent role in medieval music, as illustrated by its place at the very top of the carved arch of instruments above the entrance to Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. It later fell into obscurity, until guitarist Valentin Clastrier rediscovered the instrument and brought it into the modern age. This episode features his work with French and German jazz musicians, as well as recordings by Pascal Lefeuvre, who takes a very different approach, teaming up with early music specialist Luis Delgado [pictured].
