A party without borders! Mixed by DJ Safri: CultureClash Mix.
For years, the CultureClash Project was hidden far away in the musical past of DJ Safri. It was 1992, the world of dance music was pretty shaken up by the rise of house and techno. Safri had always been active in this music as a DJ and producer under a pseudonym. Together with Arno Peeters (aka Tape TV) and Richard van der Giessen (aka DJ White Delight) he was working on a brand new project at the same time, in which the cold electronic sounds of techno were swapped for more organic and ‘worldly’ ones.
At the request of London record label Irdial Discs, known for its unconventional electronic dance music, they made a one hour radio mix with music of their own. It was broadcasted in the London region and later also in Berlin, Denmark and The Netherlands. Although several record labels showed interest in releasing the music, eventually this didn’t happen. The tapes got lost in a drawer somewhere and all three musicians went their own way.
Now, 25 years later, the project is pulled out of that drawer once and for all. It has finally been released by the new British ‘Lost Futures’ label (apt name), which describes it as ‘timeless’, ‘otherworldy, ambitious and optimistic’.
It also turned out to be a kind of blueprint of what Safri would be focusing on from 2003: exotic dance music from far places, whether or not mixed with electronics.
In today’s Solta Franga a nonstop mixed version of CultureClash, in line with the original radio mix from 1992.
The album will be for sale from 3 November 2017 on double vinyl, digitally and – oh yes- audio cassette.
