Viola player Maurice Horsthuis (born in Breda on 28 April 1948) supports a more important role of the string section in improvised music.
In 1984, Bimhuis Amsterdam gave carte blanche to bassist Ernst Glerum, who invited Horsthuis and cellist Ernst Reijseger to form the Amsterdam String Trio.
