The Palace of Nostalgia

Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg.

Jazz, blues and Dutch chewing gum card music. We start in the world of Black Magic: Shirley Horn (‘That old black magic’), followed by a lover’s lament (‘Minsan Lamang’) by Xavier Cugat and a surprising tune by French sound artist AndrĂ© Popp.

And further: the obscure blues singer Lil Green (‘Give your mama one smile’), guitarist/singer Teddy Bunn with trumpeter Hot Lips Page’s trio (‘Evil man’s blues’) and the cowboy formation Sons of the Pioneers (The timber trail)

Also jazz: the saxophonists Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond with ‘Blight of the fumble bee’, Duke Ellington & Ray Nance (‘Bakiff’), we have a mini-course in yodelling, a stirring rendition of an old song by Louis Davids and Margie Morris by Ramses Shaffy and the British duo Michael Flanders & Donald Swann cover the armadillo.

Another hint of classical: Perry Como on a theme by Brahms. And to top it all off, maybe even the Beastie Boys.
