The Palace of Nostalgia

sat 4 mar 2023 19:00 hour

Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg.

The exotic Mexican Juan Arvizu (“the tenor with the silky voice”) with the Pan American Marimba Band, Nina Simone with a beautiful despairing song by Hoagy Carmichael. Also poignant: Jules de Corte about the fear of old age. And Brigitte Kaandorp, in an atypical protest song for her.

Furthermore, the quartet of guitarist Laurindo Almeida with saxophonist Bud Shank in “Nono”, trumpeter Chet Baker and alto saxophonist Art Pepper with the title track of “The Route” and Coleman Hawkins about a past love (“I’m through with love”).

From the war years, a cozy, but also “wrong” recording by the band of Ernst van ‘t Hoff (“5 Uhr tee bei Rütli”). In contrast, a bitter song by Uut and Ber Hulsing about forgotten anonymous resistance heroes (“Van jou heb ik niets meer gehoord”).

From another musical universe, the Matthew Herbert Big Band, which specializes in “found sounds” with “Nonsounds”.

Also, an early Abbey Lincoln with “Strong Man” from her album “That’s him!”, Mel Tormé with the Frank Popp Ensemble, Barney Kessel, Skeeter Davis and for French sounds Paul Mauriac and Fredo Gardoni.
