The Source of Sound 67 Amazon Indians

Tonight, we have an episode about the music of the Amazon Indians, whose land keeps getting threatened by profit-hungry criminals and companies. It seems that the genocide of the Indians that started more than 500 years ago when Columbus ‘discovered’ this land is carried on by the Brazilian president Bolsonaro, his golddiggers and executioners, and big companies like Chevron, Petroplus, and China National Petroleum.
In this episode, we’ll listen to recordings from the Amazon that were made 70 to 80 years ago. The 78 rpm records Musique Primitive Indienne, Mission Orénoque-Amazone, which was recorded by Pierre-Dominique Gaisseau in Columbia and Venezuela in 1949. We’ll also listen to a number of different releases from the Musée de l’Homme from Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru from the 50s. These releases showcase the unique music of the Amazonian Indians, which is now gone, just like the Indians themselves and large portions of the Amazon. The music is special thanks to its sounds and instruments like the large bamboo flutes and clarinet-like instruments, the many rattles and shakers, and the unusual voicings and harmonies. We’ll end this episode with a recent recording of the Wayapi from Frans-Guyana of all places, where their rights of natives are still acknowledged.
