In memoriam: Ingram Marshall.

The New York Times recently referred to him as a composer of mystical sounds. On 31 May of this year, the American composer Ingram Marshall died at the age of 80 from the effects of Parkinson’s disease. He leaves behind a rich oeuvre in which melancholy, dreamy vistas and electronic experimentation compete for the limelight. One moment, he wrote a sparkling, melodious piano quartet; the next, he plunged deep into electronics and tape music. His meditative sounds combine influences from Indonesian gamelan music, minimalism, early music and late romanticism. One of his great heroes was Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, but he also admires pioneers of minimal music such as Charlemagne Palestine, John Adams and La Monte Young. Ingram Marshall’s music has a great cinematic narrative power and fully envelops its listeners. His work also appears on soundtracks by Martin Scorsese (‘Shutter Island’) and Werner Herzog (‘Schrei Aus Stein’), among others. This broadcast is dedicated to Ingram Marshall and features well-known and lesser-known works by his hand, performed by the Kronos Quartet, Theatre of Voices and Dunsmuir Piano Quartet, among others.
