Samuel Andreyev.

This episode of ‘Theme’ focuses on composer, singer-songwriter, poet, teacher, interviewer and podcast maker Samuel Andreyev (pictured above).

Samuel Andreyev was born in Ontario, Canada in 1981. When he was five years old he started getting violin lessons. He studies cello, oboe and composing at the Conservatoire royal de musique in Toronto. From 2003 until 2005 he studies composing under Allain Gaussin at the conservatory of Savran in France, and then from 2006 under Frédéric Durieux at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris. Nowadays, he teaches at the Strasbourg Center at the University of Syracuse and the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg.

As a teacher, Andreyev is active on multiple fronts. He doesn’t only teach classes at music schools, but he has also established a popular YouTube channel where he analyzes works by various composers such as Varèse, Ives, Webern, Bartók, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Stockhausen, Feldman, Ligeti, Ferneyhough, and Holliger. The video where he films himself while listening to Morton Feldman’s six-hour-long Second String Quartet is particularly fascinating.

In the realm of popular music, he garnered attention for his analyzation of Captain Beefheart’s iconic album Trout Mask Replica and his interviews with members of The Magic Band.

Alongside Andreyev’s own musical compositions, we will showcase pieces by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, Michael Finnissy, and Brian Ferneyhough.
