Composers: Don Redman | Duke Ellington

Singer Chick Bullock (1894-1981) remained relatively unknown in Europe, but was popular in America in the 30s. He was frequently invited as vocalist by conductors who did not have their own permanent vocalist for their record recordings. He was among others the vocalist of Duke Ellington, Mills Blue Rhythm Band and Don Redman’s orchestra. Besides this, he made recordings with bands of his own. This programme features a selection of these.

Recordings from:

The Duke – CD: Black & Tan Fantasy and CD Creole
Rhapsody – History 204144 and 204145- 302
Mills Blue Rhythm Band – Classics 660
Luis Russell Story 1929 – 1934 – Retrieval RTR 79023
The Essential Chick Bullock – Retrieval RTR 79035
