Singers & Songwriters : Leo Fuld | Bob Dylan | Leonard Cohen.

1- Leo Fuld.  (19:07 min)
(Rotterdam 1912 † Amsterdam 1997) was a Dutch singer specializing in Yiddish song. He was the third of 10 children and grew up in a poor Jewish family. At the age of sixteen, Leo Fuld was already leading services in synagogues in the provinces. He made his debut at Café de Kool on the Kruiskade in Rotterdam, where he sang 60 songs for one guilder. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, Leo Fuld left for the United States to perform. It was his salvation. During the war, Fuld’s entire family was murdered by the Nazis. After years in America, Leo Fuld returned to the Netherlands at the age of 80. In 1995, documentary filmmaker Netty van Hoorn made a film about his life. The film led to Leo Fuld receiving media attention again, and the documentary was nominated for a Golden Calf.

2– Bob Dylan.  (22:16 min)

For the first time since his 2012 album, Bob Dylan wrote his own material again, resulting in the combative, mythical, and contemplative album Rough And Rowdy Ways. In this album, Dylan analyzes the decline of the Western world following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. However, he also gives his own, not insignificant role in post-war Western culture a place, for example in the opener I Contain Multitudes. As a singer, Dylan sounds relaxed and less grumpy than we have come to expect from him in recent years. The bluesy folk songs are dominated by the lyrics.

3- Leonard Cohen.  (17:45 min)
The album was released in late 2016, 19 days before Leonard Cohen passed away at the age of 82. He left behind a unique body of work. In 48 years, the Jewish poet, singer, or troubadour from Montreal made only fourteen studio albums. They form a universe in themselves – cryptic, direct, sensual, dark, prophetic, poetic, and captivating. Leonard Cohen’s words creep into your head, sneak through your soul. His oeuvre touches ‘something higher’, but is often also about how men are and how they see women. Or want to see them.
