In this two-part series, we delve into songs dealing with street and state terror. They include expressions of protest by activist groups, as well as actions carried out by government authorities. Sometimes those actions are brutally violent, even murderous, or highly sophisticated and subtle, designed to silence opposing voices and political dissidents. Some actions lead to devastating terrorist attacks—events that, too, have inspired songs.
This first episode focuses on music about ‘eliminated’ resistance heroes and freedom fighters, alongside songs about bloody attacks on innocent, ordinary people taking part in peaceful protests. Part 2 brings more humour and perspective to the subject.
