A new God in Heaven: the music cassette tape
Invented by the Dutch Lou Otten in the 1960s, it led end 1970s and early 1980s to the start of a vibrant DIY-cassette tape culture, in which musicians recorded their own music themselves and distributed it. In The Netherlands, it was the VPRO radio programme “De Radiola Improvisatie Salon” from Willem de Ridder that provided the groundwork for this movement. He invited listeners to record their own music on a cassette tape, from 1978 until 1984. In this episode of Free Radicals we take a closer look at the medium music cassette tape and the LP Willem de Ridder & the Radio Art Foundation present “Radiola”, released by Dead Mind Records.
