Metamorphoses

In this episode of Metamorphoses about remarkable instruments, the next hour is devoted to the hurdy-gurdy, or vielle. The instrument is often abused as a simple melody instrument that can only be used for accompanying a dance. Yet the instrument was used by troubadours to accompany their songs, and classic pieces were composed for it. The hurdy-gurdy disappeared from podiums altogether, save for a few countries like France. In the last decade, a clear revival has been happening, during which the instrument’s build, playing technique and repertoire have gone through quite a revolution.

In this programme, you can hear both the ‘classic’ repertoire of the hurdy-gurdy as well as contemporary and super modern pieces.
