Special Instruments episode 8: percussion.
Polytimbral tamburello by Carlo Rizzo
The fifth Friday in the month means another hour of Metamorphoses with this time a new episode in the series Special Instruments. Join us in this hour focussing on percussion.

The percussion instruments are probably the most varied and extensive group of instruments. Firstly because there are many variations of the same instruments – they can differ in size, shape, regional and nation-specific adjustments – and besides that percussion does not just include the extensive collection of – simply spoken – the drums (membranophones) in various sorts and shapes. It also includes the so-called idiophones: sound producers of natural materials like stone (for example the udu, the percussion vase), metals (triangle, bells and gong) or wood (the txalaparta, the musical Basque ‘railway sleepers’).
What makes it more difficult is that the percussion instruments are rarely taking the lead but they usually have a supporting role, serving the rhythm, the melody, et cetera. So our short overview in the 8th episode of Metamorphoses’ Special Instruments is surely not complete. Despite that, we do have some startling recordings, beautiful music and virtuosic drums, knocks, beats et cetera. And during this hour you will discover that you can easily participate from your home location.
