In episode one of the two-part series ‘The other Sandy Denny’ you heard contemporaries of Sandy Denny, who passed away 37 years ago. He is still considered one of the best singer-songwriters in England. These colleagues were labelled as successors, source of inspiration or inspired, but also as competition or just a copy. In this second episode we will examine performers who are connected with Denny in one way or another.
This can serve as a replacement of the female singer at the annual Cropredy Festival that is still organized by Denny’s former band Fairport Convention every year. The one, Vicky Clayton, was soon viewed as the successor because of her similar voice(use). However, this has also ruined the career of Clayton. For the other ‘substitute’ Julliene Regen the opposite applies. She was already a well known rock singer when she made some contributions to the festival. Linde Nijland grew up in the Netherlands with the collection of British folk-rock records of her father. It was inevitably to release a tribute CD with adaptations of Sandy Denny. To conclude we will hear Josienne Clarke, who at first wasn’t liked by the conservative fans but was accepted when she released a concept album with adaptations of traditionals and put in some Danny songs in her repertoire.
