Concert recordings of Boubacar Traoré, made on February 8, 2015 in Rasa.
Malian singer and guitarist Boubacar Traoré performed in a jam-packed Rasa. He is seen as the eminence grise of the Malian blues. His eventful life was recorded in the book ‘Mali Blues’ (Lieve Joris) and in the movie ‘Je chanterai pour toi’ (Jacques Sarasin).
He sang and played with the Buffet de la Gare de Bamako with the Pioneers Jazz band from the age of 21. National radio played his songs, including Mali Twist, which was an immediate hit. He scored two more hits in the rock and roll style blues.
After the military coup in 1968 Boubacar Traoré disappeared from sight.
In 1989 he recorded the album Mariama on a cassette tape, which was mistaken for a posthumous album. His wife Pierrette passes away and Boubacar moved to France where he earned a living as a bricklayer.
Then his fate turned. The Dutch producer of the Sterns Africa label, Robert Urbanus, received the tape of Mariama and was able to trace Boubacar in his immigrant hostel in France. He took him on tour through England and that is how his life changed…..
In the beginning of this year he released his new CD ‘Mbalimaou’. During this concert Boubacar is accompanied by the master harmonica player Vincent Buchner and Babah Kone on kalabas, percussion and singing.
