This night is all about Fado Diva’s.

What the blues is to the United States and the tango to Argentina, is what fado does for Portugal. The music mimics a feeling, that the Portugese call ‘saudade’. There is no clear translation, but it’s like melancholy, nostalgia and desire, all wrapped into one. Fado originated in Lisbon in the nineteenth century, when traditional Portugese music and word art meshed with music from overseas colonies, such as Angola, Mozambique and Brasil. The birthplace of fado is the worker’s district of Alfalma. A second form, played by the intelligentsia, arose from Coimbra, which is mainly populated by students. The most famous fado singer was the divinely adored Amalia Rodrigues (1920-1999).
